To visit South Africa, there is a long list of countries that are not required to have a visa in order to visit. Some countries, e.g., Kenya, are required to have a visa, but are eligible for an E-visa completed online. However, there are some “Camcore” countries that are required to have a formal paper visa, including Colombia, Guatemala, and Indonesia. Delegates from these countries should begin the registration and visa process as soon as possible to ensure sufficient time for the paperwork to get completed.
Meeting Dates and Locations
The main meeting will run from Tuesday Nov 1 to Friday Nov 11. Arrival will be on Mon Oct 31 in Durban, and departure will be from the Nelspruit Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport on Sat Nov 12.
The main meeting will include four ½ day indoor technical sessions. We will see forestry in sub-tropical Zululand, warm temperate and cool temperate sites in the Midlands region of Kwazulu-Natal, as well as around Sabie in Mpumulanga. We will visit a number of forest genetics and species trials, the Sappi Ngodwana Nursery, the Mondi Fire Control Center, the York sawmill and plywood plant, and see tropical and cool-temperate species and hybrids of both eucalypts and pines.
If there is sufficient interest, there will be a post-conference tour offered in the southern Cape region from Mon Nov 14 to Wed Nov 16. Interested participants should make their way from Nelspruit to Port Elizabeth over the weekend. We will need at least five delegates for this tour, and there is a limit of 14 delegates in total. This tour will see primarily pine forestry, and will also include a visit to some indigenous forests, the MTO Longmore sawmill, an MTO and a PG Bison fire control center, and a furniture manufacturing operation.
We will also be offering a spouse tour during the dates of the main meeting. This tour will include a guide, transportation, and most meals. Most days will include tourist activities in the same areas as the main meeting. One or two days will be primarily travel / technical days with the main group. We will need a minimum of five participants for this tour.
Past Annual Meetings
Unfortunately, the Camcore Annual Meeting was once again held online via zoom. While we continue to miss travelling and meeting with our colleagues in person the 2021 Annual Meeting was an excellent opportunity to share some of the exciting research being done by Camcore and our members. Over a two-week period we held six sessions over a two-week period on the Zoom platform.
As with everything else in this strange year, the 2020 Annual Meeting will not be what we have enjoyed in past years. Since we cannot all be present in one place this year, we will conduct our 2020 Annual Meeting online where we can review the status of our research and breeding projects, have some member presentations, and plan for 2021 and beyond. Specifically, we held six Annual Meeting sessions over a two-week period, using Zoom.
The 2019 annual meeting focused on strategic planning for the next ten years and had no formal host. At the end of the meeting there were two day to visit forestry and tree breeding operations of The Navigator Company, a large Portuguese pulp and paper company. Nuno Borralho, a well-known tree breeder from Portugal, helped arrange our visit.
The 2018 annual meeting was hosted by Smurfit Kappa Colombia.
The 2017 annual meeting was hosted by Camcore, SLU (Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet) and Skogforsk.
The 2016 annual meeting was hosted by Camcore, Klabin SA, and WestRock.
The 2015 annual meeting was hosted by Camcore, WestRock, ArborGen, USDA Forest Service, and IFCO.
The 2014 annual meeting was hosted by Grupo De Guate and Camcore.
The 2013 annual meeting was hosted by Cape Pine, Komatiland, Mondi, PG Bison, Sappi, and York Timbers.
The 2012 annual meeting was hosted by Arauco Bioforest and CMPC Forestal Mininco.
The 2011 annual meeting was hosted by associate member CSIRO.
The 30th Anniversary 2010 annual meeting was hosted by Camcore.
The 2009 annual meeting was sponsored by Stora Enso Uruguay and Weyerhaeuser.
